Five Kitchen Tools I Reach For Every Single Day

By Amber · July 15, 2026 · 4 min read

A beautiful kitchen full of gadgets you never use isn't a kitchen — it's a display. These are the five unglamorous things I actually touch every day, and why they earn their counter space.

People assume "Amber's Kitchen" means something elaborate. The truth is the opposite. The reason I cook at home as much as I do isn't discipline — it's that I've quietly removed every bit of friction I can. Good tools don't make you fancier. They make the easy choice the default one.

Here are the five that never go back in a drawer.

1. A knife that's actually sharp

One good chef's knife does 90% of the work, and a dull knife is the single biggest reason people dread prep. Sharp is faster, safer, and honestly a little joyful. If you buy one thing on this list, make it this — and a two-minute honing rod to keep it that way.

2. The big glass mixing bowls

Nesting glass bowls sound boring right up until you own them. Prep-ahead, marinate, microwave, serve, store — one set covers all of it, and being able to see what's inside means less waste and fewer mystery leftovers.

3. A sheet pan I'm not precious about

Half my weeknight dinners are just "vegetables and a protein, one pan, 400 degrees." A sturdy sheet pan turns that into a complete meal with almost no cleanup. I keep two so dinner and the next day's roasting can happen back to back.

4. The little digital scale

This is the sleeper hit. A cheap kitchen scale makes baking work the first time and makes portioning effortless. It's the difference between "recipes are fussy" and "recipes just work."

5. A cold-press juicer (for the mornings)

This one ties back to my morning ritual — it's how I make the fresh version of my ginger-turmeric shot. It's the most "extra" thing on the list, and the one I'd defend the hardest.
